Farm Wars

Marijuana Growers: Hang onto your pot, here come the genetically modified genes!

It is painfully obvious that mad scientists have gone wild and are in charge of our health and food supply. And now, they want to grab hold of Mary Jane, Weed, Cannabis, Pot, Marijuana, or whatever else you want to call it.

Yeah, we know it has medicinal properties, and so do they. That is one of the reasons it has remained illegal for so long. Someone growing a plant in their backyard and foregoing over-the-counter pain medication, or making a tincture that helps fight cancer just might cut into Big Pharma profits, and we can’t have that. At least not until it can be strictly controlled by the very drug companies that specialize in delivering, for a hefty price, a barrage of drugs designed to, at the very least, incapacitate, and not actually cure anything.

So, here it is. The start of something big. Marijuana gone GMO:

Greenhouses lined with genetically modified marijuana sit on a mountainside just an hour ride from Cali, Colombia, where farmers say the enhanced plants are more powerful and profitable.

One greenhouse owner said she can sell the modified marijuana for 100,000 pesos ($54) per kilo (2.2 pounds), which is nearly 10 times more than the price she can get for ordinary marijuana.

Local authorities said the arrival of genetically modified seeds, which are imported from Europe and the United States have allowed “a bigger production and better quality at the same time”.

A police commander in the Cauca region where Cali is located, Carlos Rodriguez, said one of the modified varieties goes by the name, “Creepy”.

Another seed modified in The Netherlands is fetching a good price in the area, said a foreign researcher, who asked to remain anonymous. That version, well-known in Europe as “La Cominera”, is named for the Colombian village where it grows.

“La Cominera’s” higher value is due to its increased concentration of THC, the plant’s principal active ingredient, and the modified plant verges on an 18 percent concentration level, compared to a normal marijuana plant’s two to seven percent, said the researcher. (Yahoo News)

Coincidence that this is going on just as Big Pharma is busy patenting a Marijuana pill? Notice that the genetically modified seeds are imported from Europe, the Netherlands and the United States.

Despite the US government’s staunch opposition to medical cannabis farms in Oakland and elsewhere, the feds have begun licensing a whole lot of large legal pot grows throughout the country. But this weed is not for cannabis dispensaries and their patients; it’s for Big Pharma.

The Drug Enforcement Administration told Legalization Nation in an e-mail last week that 55 unnamed companies now hold licenses to grow cannabis in the United States, a fact that contradicts the widespread belief that there is only one legal pot farm in America, operated under the DEA for research purposes. It appears as if the upswing in federally approved pot farming is about feeding the need of pharmaceutical companies who want to produce a generic version of THC pill Marinol and at least one other cannabis-based pill for a wide variety of new uses. (Cannabis Culture)

Let’s see if I have this straight. Marijuana, natural, grown in your backyard: BAD! Marijuana farms, licensed by the feds and operated by the DEA for Big Pharma, and most likely genetically modified in a laboratory: GOOD! Hey, bubee, don’t you understand that this is bad??? So, off to jail you go for growing a healthy plant in your yard, but if you splice genes in a lab and grow a GM plant, changing that plant from something healthy to something designed to kill, patent it, and hand it over to the drug companies to push, then all the riches of the planet are yours, courtesy of your friendly neighborhood U.S. government.

Sorry it is a bad link but the book is Methods in molecular biology, Volume 2; Volume 344
on pg 373 it speaks of the GMO process. I found this book by doing a google on “agrobacterium marijuana” , this will show some evidence for those who doubt whether GMO MJ is out there or not.

  2. csidegal says:

There is evidence saying that GMO MJ has been made by introducing an agrobacterium to make it more resistant to diseases and pests and to increase production. Here is a link to book:

    books.google.com/books?id=mRGePpQuGjEC&pg=PA373&lpg=PA373&dq=agrobacterium+marijuana&source=bl&ots=x5W12vpROE&sig=lStHY9xnyCaChS9_w2I4QuUHazg&hl=en&ei=Jtx9TsmsM-bk0QHwtqncDw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=4&ved=0CD0Q6AEwAw#v=onepage&q=agrobacterium%20marijuana&f=false

It is believed that this agrobacterium has come to jump species and is now causing disturbing disease in humans. Anyone getting strange skin lesions that never heal should consider the fact that their MJ is GMO. It has been grown in Canada too.

Refuse to obey the FDA and other tyrants. Expose the lackey cops as well.

  4. Andrew dickey says:

GMO or otherwise, there is an assault on any plant that you can grow or use for free.
When we learn tO grow your own and save our own seeds , then we have
A chance to reclaim our food, medicines and our lives. Any time we eat less HIgh fructose COrn SYrup and other funny Ingrediants, the powers that be doesn’t like it!
MY family and I are work hard to grow and preserve our food. We
are learning daily. This year it’s chickens and a bigger garden. We
also try to make better choices along the way.

Thanks, Rense.com and Barbera for creating an awareness and inspiring
Thought and educating others! Debate also is good to read. Who ever
You are, invite a change and raise a small backyard flock of chickens
and raise some food! Canning and sharing are good to do!!

Some day, those who denied others may themselves be denied, Karma is some strong stuff!

  7. Levi says:

Gmo’s aren’t allowed in The Netherlands so we can’t export them either. Also we have LOADS of different natural breeds of weed plants that produce around 18% even reaching to 22% but none of them are gmo’s just cross breeding the most potent plants to produce a high yeald weedplant.

  8. Higman says:

Theres a difference between genetically modified seeds and the growing technique that most of the green bud that kicked asses since the late 70’s. Genetically Modified means tampering with the DNA or genesin a seed. The stuff we have all known here for so long was Hybred from plant cuttings, taken from Mother plants long ago. It’s not rocket science…it’s just gardening!!!!

  9. Latierra says:

Yes, pot is GMO…grown under artificial light inside and they are short little plants that never see the light of day. The non GMO is taller than a sunflower and has normal THC levels and is grown outside in the warm sun (in select unknown places) but I’m not even sure if natural marijuana exists anymore and this is sad. If I ever needed medical marijuana, I would try and find the non GMO kind but it looks like it would be next to impossible…unless I perhaps traveled to Latin America and talked to the natives to see if they had some. I would love to grow a marijuana plant(outside) that is non GMO just because I can..but I cannot because it isn’t “legal” and I don’t have a marijuana seed from the 1950 or 60’s! I just hope “they” don’t outlaw anymore plants…think how ridiculous this is!

  10. Carl says:

    Really!
Anytime you have the ‘so-called gov’t’ and big pharm involved in anything, are you really going to try to convince yourself that any good (or positive benefits) will come out of it.

Come on now people wake up!

The truth has been sitting right under our noses and some folks still want to play mind- fuck games with themselves (and others, by posting) that ‘this and that’, can’t be true.

The truthis we need to stop playing these ‘i can’t believe this and that mind-fuck game with ourselves’ and start piecing together the truth (which is “believe none of what you hear and not even half of what you see” with regards to so-called gov’t, main-stream media, society sanctioned (so-called) authorities, etc.
And start using that awe-inspiring brain for more than just fertilizer for your hair.

    THINK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Toasty says:

Your article title is misleading, and sensationalistic.
Pot is not being made GMO. It’s being bred for higher and higher concentrations of THC. That’s natural. If Pot was GMO, Monsanto would have to have invested billions into research and worked on it for years, which they have not.

  12. Myles O'Howe says:

High THC cannabis are ancient strains preserved over time. Genetically modified cannabis IS something I think the PTB are working on so it is important for cannabis growers to stay organic. Get your seeds and save the strains. Buy many strains if you want diversity and only buy KNOWN strains that have BEEN AROUND FOR AT LEAST 6 YEARS. Some of the older strains are the best.

Health Canada is trying to destroy medical marijuana!

  13. Andre in L.A. says:

Reminds me of splicing marijuana onto hops plants. While I never had success in producing a smokable product, I did have the makings of the finest home-brew you ever tried! I wonder if I could license a medicinal microbrewery? A bit of humor: When I first tried this, I had walked into the gardening section of a large retailer, and asked if he had hops. He grinned, looking at my long hair, and said “yes, but not the kind you need to splice pot.” He suggested looking in High Times.

  14. Digital Gravy says:

Is it not interesting how history keeps repeating itself? Prohibition, harken back to the 1920-30’s. All liquor, hard, beer, wine even hard cider was illegal to make or even possess and consume! Two ways where left open to the citizen to enjoy their drink of choice.
    1. Was the Speak easy, usually hidden from the law and required a pass word or money to gain admission. (Speak Eases) where so named due to the fact that one didn’t have to worry about cops or other negatively perceived influences on citizens who where enjoying some (illegal, at that time) libation.

    2. However besides Speak Eases, there was a totally legal way to gain liquor, (for medicinal purposes, you understand?) and that was to visit a doctor who could prescribe a 5oz. bottle once a week for any conditions the doctor felt was appropriate. This hidden under the table legalization gave the liquor industry, distributors and doctors a source of income, while the average citizen was arrested and sent to prison, or worse made “bath tub gin” so named because bathtubs where the only thing big enough to make up batches for a thirsty public! So sometimes many would people become ill or died from drinking Bathtub Gin due to bad batches where shortcuts where used to speedup the making of the gin.

Today we see the same effect going on with marijuana. Not for moral reasons as was touted with liquor but because money and power are on the line with the 90 year long probation of marijuana. Power to jail citizens, steal their property. Money to keep marijuana and by example other drugs expensive by keeping it all illegal. Of course medical marijuana is now legal for doctors to prescribe and patents to use (provided you have a right documents!) otherwise off to jail you go!

    ….. sound familiar?
Don’t hold your breath on legalizing Mary anytime too soon, as government, judges, lawyers and cops what to keep it illegal.
It brings in too much money. Your government is working against you…. but what else is new?

  15. Melissa says:

It’s not nonsense, there is some truth behind it, to what extent I do not know.

  16. Higman says:

it’s a new spin on the old Paraquat or Govt weed thing. Fact is that if it comes in at a higher price, many won’t be on board with it. I don’t see anything coming up from this simply because the quagmire of political BS is so thick now it would take an act of Mother Nature and God to change the tide of minds in the govt. Regulation, meaning an organized solution for growing and distribution, whether on a Fed level or contracted out, makes organizing FEMA for Katrina relief look like a roadside lemonade stand in their eyes. Also…there are so many different strains of the stuff out there in circles small and large, and like Prohobition Days, everyone thinks theirs is the best hooch.

  17. Dr Hemp says:

This article is pure nonsense, there is no such thing as GM cannabis. The idea that cannabis growers are able to manipulate seeds in the fine detail required to implant specific gene sequences to produce a plant with higher amounts of THC is totally ridiculous.

It might be theoretically possible but the costs involved to produce such a plant would be astronomical and what would be the point when the same thing can and has been easily achieved by cross breeding.

  18. chris says:

Having been to Amsterdam to do firsthand research myself, I can assure you the only mods to genes going on are simple crossbreeding. People in Amsterdam have been using technology to evaluate the strenth of a strain. They continue to breed it with another strain producing an even stronger concentration of THC. This has been going on for years. Furthermore, not only are the seeds making there way to large scale grow operations in south American countries, so are the techniques to grow them. This is all essentially a black market free economy in action producing competiton that leads to innovation. And its awesome. Now when Monsanto comes out with a product–be scared, very scared.

  19. f8te says:

This article is totally wrong. It IS NOT GMO!!! It is the same crossed strains being sold here in the US. There is no evidence that the seeds being used are a genetically modified strain. No where in the article do they point that out. All that is pointed out is the name of the two strains in question and no proof of a GMO start.

  20. anadianant says:

Nice article barbara. I’ve known at least since 2003/4 that the legalization of pot was close (relatively speaking). I believe Ron P and Bawwwwny Fwank have legislation introduced yesterday to do just that.

SO, I think it’s a double dipping grabbermint again, they want the Big Pharma money and they want to control “legal” pot.

Such a waste and a shame, all these years the world has to live under stupid, capitalist, greedy monsters, who took away all that was natural and good.

When things get really difficult, they will legalize it fully and release all those poor pot “traffickers”, held on various specious laws (three strikes etc.), who are by now hardened criminals from extended jail stays.

    Mad world.

I do believe you might find my tangentially related article interesting.

Where does it say once that these plants have been “genetically modified”. You can breed in certain qualities and call it modified, this is a lot of non reporting by someone who doesn’t understand cannabis sativa.

  22. thomas says:

And MJ was made illegal all around in the world by the U.S government, and not by the pharmaceutical complex. They where one of the lobbyist, amongst many others, but in the end it was the U.S government who caved in and made it illegal, starting the ‘War on Drugs’. Hemp and MJ to smoke are NOT the same, although both got affected in many countries. USA is importing HEMP! Although you would have to smoke a whole field of hemp (industrial MJ) to even get a smile, potent MJ has been cultivated thousand of years ago already for cultural and medical purposes. Industrial hemp (MJ) can have only around a THC level of 2.5% to qualify, and is in average around 1% as I can remember. This would produce nothing but a headache but EXCELLENT FIBER > http://www.hempowered.com/what-is-hemp/60.html

  23. thomas says:

And do you really think the dad in the video used just backyard weed for his oil? Indoor and Greenhouse production is the preferred choice since decades! Not that outdoor can produce good quality, but not compared to your ‘lab’ fabrication of MJ. For oil I would rather use very potent MJ,but still being low on THC#9, so I would not have to drown my child with the amount of oil in his treatment and keep side effects to a minimum. Naturally grown ‘backyard weed’ might not even have the wanted effect on such a treatment or might not work even at all. The dad was right with his choice, absolutely, but I would not assume he was using his ‘backyard’ weed to make the oil. He would need such a high amount versus indoor or greenhouse grown weed that this make is already unrealistic.
