Azure Standard

Dear Azure Customers. We’ve some extremely urgent news to share with you. All of Azure Standard’s Organic wheat, field peas, barley, Einkorn, and beef is grown by Azure Farm on 2,000 acres of pristine, organically certified land in Sherman County, Oregon. The county is considering imposing draconian, highly toxic weed management laws and may force us to have our 2,000 acre organic farm sprayed with Roundup and other toxic herbicides. You read that right: we’d be forced to have our organic farm sprayed with Roundup, and we would then be forced to foot the bill! We’ve just over 1 week to get as much support as possible. Please review the video at https://vimeo.com/216920516 or learn more at https://www.azurestandard.com/healthy-li…/…/azure-farm-moro/ and then take action today. Thank you for your support!

An Organic Farm Under Threat

Azure Farms is a working, Certified Organic farm located in Moro, Central Oregon, in Sherman County. It has been Certified Organic for about 18 years. The farm produces almost all the organic wheat, field peas, barley, Einkorn, and beef for Azure Standard.

Sherman County is changing the interpretation of its statutory code from controlling noxious weeds to eradicating noxious weeds. These weeds include Morning Glory, Canada Thistle, and Whitetop, all of which have been on the farm for many years, but that only toxic chemicals will eradicate.

Organic farming methods – at least as far as we know today – can only control noxious weeds—it is very difficult to eradicate them.

What’s Happening?

Sherman County may be issuing a Court Order on May 22, 2017, to quarantine Azure Farms and possibly to spray the whole farm with poisonous herbicides, contaminating them with Milestone, Escort and Roundup herbicides.

This will destroy all the efforts Azure Farms has made for years to produce the very cleanest and healthiest food humanly possible. About 2,000 organic acres would be impacted; that is about 2.8 times the size of the City of London, England, and 1.5 times the size of the city center of Philadelphia that could be sprayed with noxious, toxic, polluting herbicides.

The county would then put a lien on the farm to pay for the expense of the labor and chemicals used.

Take Action Now

If you are concerned about where your food comes from, enjoy Organic and non-GMO food grown in the United States, and support organic farmers, contact Sherman County Court before May 22, 2017 (and preferably before May 17 when the next court discussion will be held).

Contact info:

  1. Via email at lhernandez@co.sherman.or.us or…
  2. Call Lauren at 541-565-3416.

Raise your voice and speak up for you and your families and communities.

This proposed action is completely unreasonable and would destroy an organic farm and pollute a massive area. If enough voices that benefit from organic produce speak up, the county will understand that there are people that care about their food NOT containing toxic chemicals. And if the supporters of healthy food can have a louder voice than the supporters of toxic chemicals, every politician will listen. PLEASE take action today and share this message. Overwhelm the Sherman County representatives with your voice.

Take Action Today

Email or call Sherman County via email at lhernandez@co.sherman.or.us or call Lauren at 541-565-3416.

Thank you for all your support and well wishes so far.

Above all, please take action directly today. If you would like more information on this, feel free to add your name below and we will be in touch.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Nathan Stelzer
Azure Farm Manager

Barb’s Note:

Here is my letter to Sherman County:

It has come to my attention that Sherman County is considering forcing an organic farm to be sprayed with Roundup and other toxic herbicides to eradicate “noxious” weeds, and to force the farm to pay for it. This is against all organic standards and practices and will contaminate the organic food coming out of that farm. Those of us who are not able to tolerate these poisonous substances will suffer, as will those trying to eliminate them from their diets due to health reasons or even because they simply do not agree with the chemicals being added to our environment on a daily basis. Consider this:

“Three Washington counties – Yakima, Benton, and Franklin – experienced an unusually high number of birth defects at around the same time as Glyphosate was being used extensively for several years to eradicate noxious weeds on land and in the water. That birth defect is called anencephaly. Could there be a connection?

It appears that Yakima, Benton, and Franklin counties just happen to have three things in common – the Yakima River, a noxious weed eradication program using copious amounts of Glyphosate for years on both land and in the river, and an increase in anencephaly, which Glyphosate just happens to be suspected of causing.“

Should we add Sherman County to the list of those willing to sacrifice the health and well-being of the people living there in the name of “weed eradication?”

Please don’t force this company who grow clean and pure food not to be forced to spray their crops with your poison chemicals ! This is as wrong and it will end up hurting all of us !

Once your farm is sprayed it will no longer be organic. It will take years before it can be recertified.
Sue them. This may be a “taking” and you are entitled to compensation.

  4. Do you know the farm owners, Ian? Are you in close proximity to the farm? Have you been there? Are you speaking from experience, or just beating the chemical drum? Do you know about the situation or are you assuming that because it is an organic farm, that it must be poorly maintained? This is a well respected farm that supplies a good portion of the organic food that is consumed. You state that “Azure Farms is negligent.” Prove it.

  5. Yes, you overlooked it, D3F1ANT: “Sherman County is changing the interpretation of its statutory code from controlling noxious weeds to eradicating noxious weeds.” I find it suspicious that you supposedly failed to see this.

  6. glenn Jacobs says:

I work with Roundup to eliminate wild gourds — a poisonous, ill-smelling invasive weed.

I cut each such stem with a sharp hoe and then spritz the cut ends with Roundup.

Roundup is not good for people. To spray it around indiscriminately would be like cleaning up a restaurant kitchen by sprinkling arsenic around at random.

Those who pay extra for organic food may have a reason — or not.

Those who would destroy an organic farm may have a reason, too.

Let us all judge this case and not let the Big-Shots decide it.

  7. Ian says:

Weeds are a problem, we can all agree, and we each have our preferences on how to deal with them. Managing noxious weeds is a legal responsibility of the landowner. I support the county in making this decision based on Azure Farms not controlling their weed population to the point that it is impacting areas outside their land.

If your neighbor had an oil drum leaking onto your property, and the neighbor refused to clean it up, you’d complain to the city/county, wouldn’t you? Same situation here. Azure Farms is negligent.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) – WHO’s cancer agency – said that glyphosate, the active ingredient in the herbicide made by agriculture company Monsanto, was “classified as probably carcinogenic to humans”.https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2015/03/20/roundup-probable-carcinogen-report-says/25115481/

The infestation of superweeds has more than doubled since 2009, according to Dow Chemical, which also states that an estimated 70 million acres of U.S. farmland are infested with pesticide-tolerant weeds that cost roughly $1 billion in damages to crops so far. http://www.nbcnews.com/busines.....os-n214996

Use of more glyphosate (main active ingredient in Roundup)lreads to more illness but leads to the development of superweeds and billions of dollars in higher costs for agriculture.

This is total insanity to do this. This is just HOW BIG Monsanto really really is if they can dictate an Oregon County to do this!!!! Wonder how much $$$ went into the county commissioners bank accounts?????

  11. George H. says:

“Weed Eradication” sounds like “Human Eradication” to me. Forced weed eradications, forced vaccinations, methinks these are just precursor events, leading up to the real goal THE GREAT CULLING. It’s long past time for polite pushback, IT’S TIME FOR A REVOLUTION. The only “noxious weeds” out there is THE NOXIOUS GOVT. Mobilize the people, put bodies on the line, file “cease and desist” lawsuits, get videos on YouTube. Let’s go people, let’s go Hollywood celebrities, let’s go Organics Industry, let’s go Pro Bono lawyers, it’s time TO SAVE THE EARTH FROM THESE WRETCHED SATANIC POISONERS!!

  13. D3F1ANT says:

I might have overlooked it…but I didn’t see any reason given, in the story, for the “forced” spraying of RoundUp. What is the government’s reason? I find it suspicious that the story fails to mention the government’s justification…

  14. Andrew Ward says:

Someone mentioned on here about common law and individuals have rights and corporations do not. Is this farm corporate owned? Sounds like it has CEOs and directors of marketing and managers. I don’t agree with what is happening, but perhaps selling the farm to an individual independent farmer would be the answer?

we have the same blithering idiots in Aus also
cut down all the willows on our rivers as not native
    now?
riverbanks falling into rivers flood takes more land and no one benefited at all
except the greenadvocates n chem cos.
i am part of a small group minding a nature reserve, govt allows n pushed US also to spray anything not native
but some of the worst woody weeds killing all else? are natives,

  20. Dear America,

I have been dealing with the largest corporations in the world. It will be impossible for my company to invest millions of dollars in the development of farms in America if this practice goes forward. The insanity of spraying poisons on our food must come to an end. This farm has proven beyond doubt that weeds are not a threat to their food supply or their surrounding area. Spraying poisons on this farm is a threat to their food supply and the surrounding area. Any government official who advocates the later is simply working in favour of the chemical industry and should reconsider their position of public service. Maybe Monsanto is hiring sales representatives? Please stop this practice for the sake of humanity. Thank you for listening.

  21. United States of America is a common law jurisdiction. Under common law no one can take or damage your property. If a man or woman causes you harm, sue the man or woman responsible for the harm s/he has caused you. Make up a list with a dollar amount and send them the bill which you will sign. Sue the man or woman issuing the order. If they “Order” you, send them a bill for carrying out their order, one dollar a minute until they cease and desist for example. If you don’t see the word “order”, ask the undersigned, is this an order? Under common law, men, women have rights, corporations do not. Common law court of record is the highest law of the land. Look up Karl Lentz on YouTube. Common Law is the law of the land, corporate law is the law of the sea. Know your rights.

  22. Wanda Warkentin says:

I am writing from California where a couple of years ago our state legislature passed a bill disallowing the public from any input if the state deemed it necessary to spray any chemical for any reason. It has also come to my attention that we have something called the California Invasive Plant Council which advocates use of herbicides and which is also busy making a list of all the non native plants growing in California. New plants are put on the list daily (St Johns Wort, a widely used herbal remedy was on the list). This council consists of many University of Davis so-called experts and Nature Conservancy people. It seems that this sets the stage for similar activities here in California. Our local Sierra Club is also advocating destroying all Eucalyptus and Monterey Pine in our beautiful East Bay Hills by cutting them down and putting glyphosate on them. Are Monsanto and Bayer funding this?

Thank you. I will do what I can to make others aware and help your cause. Bless the farmers.

    Sincerely,

    Wanda Warkentin

  23. Weed eradication is the name, forcible spraying is the game. Sherman County, Oregon needs to get flooded with letters. See the contact info in the posting.

  24. What excuse are they using that they have to make you do this? I
am jut appalled. Monsanto has to be paying them off. I hope everyone will go out and vote all the parties that are involved out of office. Local, state and federal. It is the only way we are going to send a message.
I wish you the best of luck.
    Betty.
