A huge increase in the incidence and prevalence of chronic diseases has been reported in the United States (US) over the last 20 years. Similar increases have been seen globally.

The herbicide glyphosate was introduced in 1974 and its use is accelerating with the advent of herbicide-tolerant genetically engineered (GE) crops. Evidence is mounting that glyphosate interferes with many metabolic processes in plants and animals and glyphosate residues have been detected in both.

Glyphosate disrupts the endocrine system and the balance of gut bacteria, it damages DNA and is a driver of mutations that lead to cancer. In the present study, US government databases were searched for GE crop data, glyphosate application data and disease epidemiological data.

The significance and strength of the correlations show that the effects of glyphosate and GE crops on human health should be further investigated.

3 Responses to “Part 4 – Panel Discussion GMO Crops, Glyphosate and The Deterioration of Health in the USA”

  1. Glyphosate’s public acceptance was based on a lie and inappropriate “biodegradable” label, which was subsequently removed after a lawsuit. The public is still under the false impression caused by deceptive advertising that it is perfectly safe. It will take a long time for people to understand this. In the meantime, those who do understand this can cease to use it and inform everyone that they can. Personally, I will be working on a GMO ban for Klamath County no matter the pre-emption legislation passed by our pro-GMO governor. Cut down on the GMOs being grown by instituting local bans, refuse to use any formulation of Glyphosate, and keep talking. That’s my agenda.

  2. Jack Harper says:

The Gene Revolution is about an incredible threat to our collective health and about the success of genetic engineering in Agriculture. Almost all modified crops are engineered to survive one or more sprays of the herbicide RoundUp. Glyphosate the active ingredient in Roundup bounced into our world in 1964. It was invented by a small chemical company developing a line of pipe and industrial boiler cleaners. It is a small molecule, amazingly strong as a chelator, very good at what it does. Next to any biological system, it is deadly toxic by starving organisms of essential minerals in their food chain. Glyphosate competes for metal ions and so it impairs or prevents the essential activity of most metallo-proteins (the enzymes that make your cells hum together) by robbing those metal ions – particularly manganese, magnesium and cobalt. It’s in the rain, in the water and in the food, even in mother’s milk. Our food chain is badly contaminated. What do you suggest we can do about that ?

  3. Wayne says:

Shopping and Eating Fast Food has become synonymous with the American Lifestyle.
Even more disturbing is the general census that Americans are not as bright as once upon a time. U.S. Comedians, celebrities, citizens, politicians, educators, and the media, have all referenced this fact in astonishment. Many can’t find the U.S. on a map, know where Iraq is, or who the U.S. secretary is or does. Some here, and around the world have gone so far as to suggest that U.S.A. now more appropriately symbolizes Utterly Stupid Americans.
While other countries around the world just cut to the chase and all out BAN GMO’s and GLYPHOSATE, the U.S. mindlessly, and endlessly pursues the Just Label It version.
The introduction of GMO’s into the mainstream food chain, got it’s birth from Glyphosate, the need to be Round-up Resistant. Glyphosate is the feet that GMO’s walked in on.
As pervasive as G.M.O.’s are in human food, the lions share of these come indirectly in the form of 2nd generation ingestion. The animal eats the tainted plant and we in turn, eat the now tainted animal. Other countries UNDERSTAND that reading a label is next to worthless, for it simply won’t include meat or dairy, as it would be logistically IMPOSSIBLE to test and police.
Like most readily visible problems in life, there is always a not so visible, underlying cause for that problem. In other words the problem is just a symptom of a bigger problem, and is not the problem itself.
If you want to talk sustainability vs population, then LETS LOOK AT THE BIGGER PICTURE. Most of the corn, soy, and canola grown worldwide is dedicated to feeding livestock, not people! Take the livestock out of the equation and the meat that is literally feeding the Monsanto & company DRAGON, stops being served. I am not advocating vegitarianism at all, just a planetary sense based reduction.
IS MONSANTO REALLY THE PROBLEM, OR MAYBE JUST AN OPPORTUNISTIC SYMPTOM OF A LARGER PROBLEM WHO’S TIME HAS FINALLY COME??????
The amount of corn and oats required to produce one 8 oz beef steak, could fill the bowls of at least 45 hungry humans.
The land required to produce one 1/4 pound hamburger, would otherwise produce 36 lbs of potatoes.
Those who advocate population reduction may be HALF RIGHT.
They just have the wrong population in mind.
